Synopsis
DAY 1- TRAIL OF HALF-HEARTED FAITH
GOD RESCUES
Lot and Lot’s Wife
Memory Verse: Luke 11:28
He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”
Today's lesson is about obeying God wholeheartedly and being faithful to him in our daily lives.
Story of Lot and his family
In today’s session we look at the story of Lot and Lot’s wife.
LOT and his family lived with Abraham in the land of Canaan. One day quarrel broke out between Abraham and Lot’s herdsmen for water and grass. Abraham said to Lot: ‘There isn’t land enough here for all our animals, let us separate. If you go one way, then I will go the other.’
Lot looked over and saw a very beautiful part of the country that had water and a lot of good grass for his animals. This was Jordan. So, Lot chose that land and moved his family and animals there. They finally made their home in the city of Sodom.
The people of Sodom were very bad, they were so bad that God decided to destroy the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. God sent two angels to warn Lot that he was going to destroy Sodom and the nearby city of Gomorrah because they were bad.
Lot did not leave immediately rather he was very hesitant and was a little slow in going, so the angels took them by hand and led them out of the city. One of the angels said: ‘Run for your lives! Do not look back. Run to the hills, so that you won’t be killed’. Lot and his daughters asked to be allowed to go to the village of Zoar instead and ran away from Sodom and did not look back, but Lot’s wife disobeyed God and looked back. Then she became a pillar of salt.
Should we imitate Lot?
We can see how Lot’s wife disobeyed and she turned into a pillar of salt whereas Lot and his daughters escaped punishment from God.
Lot escaped though he did not obey God wholeheartedly. God’s angels had to literally take him by hand and lead his family out of the city. This shows how much love God had for Lot and his family though he was not fully obedient.
We should obey God implicitly and completely.
Our motivation for obedience should always be love.
Jesus says: If you love me, you will keep my commandments. (John 14:15).
What do we learn about God?
- God loves us all and is our protector.
- He will keep us from evil.
- God saved Lot and his daughters from disaster though Lot was very slow in obedience
- God punished Lot’s wife for disobeying him.
Application to our daily life
We must listen to God and follow his instructions. God will save those who do right. Disobedience can lead to punishment.
Conclusion
Lot’s faith was half-hearted as he spent too much time around the comforts of life in Sodom. Yet even in all of this, God was faithful and did not forget that Lot was his servant. God delivered him physically, and in the book of Peter, he conveyed to us that Lot was righteous.
It is wonderful to know that God saved an unwilling, hesitant and half-hearted Lot. This reminds us about God’s mercy and love towards Abraham and Lots family and towards us who put our trust in him.
